Most sites spend their SEO budget on the two most expensive things available: new content and external links. Meanwhile the cheapest lever sits untouched, which is the way the pages they already own point at each other.
Internal linking decides which of your pages search engines treat as important, how quickly new pages get discovered, and whether a visitor who lands on a blog post ever finds the page that explains how you help. It costs nothing but attention.
The orphan problem
Start by finding pages nothing links to. On most business sites this includes at least one service page, usually a recent one, reachable only from the sitemap and a dropdown menu. A page in that position is competing with one hand tied behind its back.
- List every URL in your sitemap.
- For each one, count the links pointing at it from elsewhere on the site — excluding the main navigation and footer.
- Anything with zero is an orphan. Anything with one is close to it.
- Navigation links count for less than links inside body copy, because every page has them.
Build hubs, not a web
Linking everything to everything is not a structure; it is noise. The pattern that works is a hub: one page that explains the whole topic, and several supporting pages that go deep on one part of it. Supporting pages link up to the hub, the hub links down to each of them, and siblings link across only where it genuinely helps the reader.
For a service business the hub is usually the service page, and the supporting pages are the articles that answer the questions people ask before buying. That is not a coincidence: the same structure that helps a reader also tells a search engine which page is the authority.
Write the anchor text like a human
Anchor text tells the engine what the destination page is about. “Click here” tells it nothing. Repeating the exact same keyword phrase forty times tells it something, but it looks manipulative and reads badly.
- Describe the destination in the words a reader would use.
- Vary the phrasing naturally across the site.
- Link from inside a sentence that gives the link a reason to exist.
- Avoid stacking three links in one paragraph — one useful link beats three ignored ones.
Link from the pages that already have authority
Not all internal links are equal. A link from a page that already ranks and receives traffic passes more value than a link from a page nobody visits. If you have one article that consistently brings people in, that page is your most valuable internal linking asset and it should point at whatever you most want to rank next.
Then check what you broke
Internal linking work has one recurring failure: links to URLs that changed. A redirect chain still works for a human and still loses value for a crawler. After any restructure, re-crawl the site and fix links that resolve through a redirect rather than pointing at the final URL.
Next step
Internal linking is the third step of AI SEO and analytics automation, after the audit and the content differentiation, because there is no point routing authority to a page that duplicates its neighbour. AI SEO Platform covers how the structure is monitored once it exists. If you want to know which of your pages are orphans, tell us what should run better and we will run the crawl.
